Class of 2015 Becomes Visting Chefs

Rondald McDonald

As part of our monthly volunteer service series, the Class of 2015 recently became “visiting chefs” at the Ronald McDonald House of North Central Florida in Gainesville. This organization helps house families that live outside of Gainesville whose children require extended stays at UF Health Shands Hospital.

Each month this year, 6-10 students have volunteered to cook dinner for the approximately 50 guests of the house. The first year PA students have become well known at the house for their BBQ chicken dinner that includes mashed potatoes, baked beans, cornbread, and even dessert!  PA students both prep and cook the meal as well as help clean up afterwards.

Involvement with the Ronald McDonald House has special importance to the UF PA school community. As future physician assistants, the class understands the importance of helping families feel comfortable while away from their homes and ensuring that parents can spend time with their children while they are in the hospital.
